PRESS

DAZED & CONFUSED 2008 Isomorph Records, the brainchild of graphic design and illustration whizz kid Kate Moross, is here to cater to all of us vinyl freaks and geeks alike.

"I love vinyl and I don't think enough labels big or small, are investing enough money in it," professes the baby-faced, blue haired south Londoner. " Vinyl might not be the most economical way to release music, but when you're a label whose sole purpose is to create nice objects, then your focus is completely different."

One of Kate's many artful endeavors (designing a range for Topshop, doing artwork for Mystery Jets, a Cadburys campaign... to name just a few), the label's debut release is the Populuxxe LP by grindcore band Cutting Pink With Knives. Producing only 200 copies, Kate intends to keep her releases to a strictly limited edition policy. "I'm selling the records as pieces of art. Not in a wanky way" she laughs, " But in the way that it's not a mass-produced commercial project. Ultimately I want the releases to be the product of an intense partnership, where in the end I create something unique that represents that band and that record alone"

viCE MAGAZINE DECEMBER REVIEWS 07 COVER OF THE MONTH!!! Cutting Pink With Knives 8/10 / Popluxxe - Isomorph Records
"I saw Cutting Pink With Knives years ago supporting Trencher in some sweaty pit somewhere. They were awful. The bass player had a wireless setup and was running around the crowd, semi-naked knocking people on the head while the rest of the guys on stage played pretty unnecessary synth-screamo. As a lesson to all bands out there (and like a big recorded two fingers up at me) Cutting Pink have somehow managed to get pretty great in the intervening period. Oh, and the cover is the best thing we’ve seen all month. Mainly ‘cos it was made by our pal Kate Moross who seems to be able to turn anything she touches in 27million carat gold. This the first release on her new record label, where does she find the time?"

CREATIVE REVIEW DECEMBER 2007 "POPULUXXE by Cutting Pink With Knives is the first release on designer and illustrator Kate Moross' own record label, Isomporph Records. Limited to just 200 edition copies, Populuxxe takes the form of a green 10" record housed in a gate fold sleeve." [ view clipping]

CREATIVE REVIEW JANUARY 2008 So perhaps it is unsurprising to learn that Isomorph is the name of the record label Moross has recently started - although it's not just a record label. "Isomorph is a new company I've set up to act as an umbrella to any publishing or side project I choose to start," she explains. "I will also be publishing a couple of books in the new year. The record label part of Isomorph was constructed to create vinyl -only releases for existing bands, as a chance for a collaboration between musicians and designers. I aim to work on a series of releases designing an aesthetic for each album or single. The last issue of CR showcased the sleeve of the labels first release, Populuxxe by Cutting Pink With Knives, which takes the form of a heavyweight green10", housed in a gatefold sleeve adorned with origami esque typography. "The vinyl itself is high in production value," says Moross. "Where most labels would scrimp and save, Isomorph aims to indulge in all aspects of vinyl releases, creating collectors' editions in small print numbers" [ VIEW CLIPPING ]

ABOUT ISOMORPH RECORDS

We all know that a killer sleeve can sell a record without so much as a listen, but at a time when accumulating albums is as easy as pressing ‘download’ on a computer screen, the music industry’s infatuation with design (not to mention good old fashioned record collecting) is fast becoming a doomed love affair. Dismayed by the recent spate of download-only releases, designer, illustrator and vinyl enthusiast Kate Moross has taken matters into her own hands with the launch of Isomorph, the world’s first art-driven record label.

Launched in November 2007, Isomorph aims to repackage existing music, paying attention to the aesthetic of each record and revelling in the joy of print process, high production value and most of all, the vinyl format. “Each release is a limited edition numbered copy with the first fifty signed and only available from www.isomorphs.com,” says Moross. “Kind of like a series of artists prints that you can listen to.”

The first band to have been treated to the Isomorph touch are Cutting Pink with Knives who have re-released their Populuxxe LP on tasty ten inch emerald vinyl. Crafting a custom candy-hued origami typeface, Moross has packaged it into a reversible gatefold sleeve complete with a linear illustration demonstrating the evolution of a piece of origami paper into a folded bird.

Isomorph is fast attracting new disciples keen to see their music immortalized not only tangibly, but also in the artwork canon, and new releases are scheduled until September 2008. The first will be dance two-piece HeartsRevolution’s Switchblade EP, due for release in April and limited to 200 copies. And what’s more, this year will see Isomorph grow to encompass a publishing house for forthcoming books designed by Moross.

“Kate Moross seems to be able to turn anything she touches in 27million carat gold”
VICE MAGAZINE

“Dazed loves Kate Moross, but she makes us sick. Barely in her second decade of life, Kate has managed to build up, develop and promote her designs at a disarming rate. Something of a renegade among the youth of London, Kate has put in the hours and worked hard to get recognition, utilising her talent in ways that is seldom seen nowadays. May the Kate Moross empire reign supreme.” DAZED & CONFUSED
